As a nanny, au pair, full-time child babysitter or, to use the official title, a Live-in caregiver in Canada, you are protected by provincial employment standards. The program is designed to promote a safe, secure working environment and allows you to change employers and secure a new work visa, or obtain a bridging visa, at any time after you come to Canada.

The overall requirements for a Live-in caregiver visa (general guidelines only):

  • A minimum of 12 years of schooling
  • Successful completion of six months full-time training related to this work or  One year of full-time work as a caregiver, at least six months with one employer
  • Some ability in English or French
  • An employment contract as a Live-in caregiver in Canada providing care in a private household for children, the elderly, or a disabled person.

The Canada Live-in caregiver program allows caregivers to move permanently to Canada after a few years of work.
